Event Description

Copper Mountain College Desert Studies provides a unique learning environment in order to promote the study of desert and arid land living - ecosystems, culture, and sustainable practises.

If you live in arid or semi-arid lands, whether it be the desert, central valley, or basin and range country you may find the ideas discussed to be worthwhile.

Hosted by ecologist, writer, and builder David Borland Brown these 3 hour lectures and discussions cover a variety of subjects such as:

09/05 Aridynamics - Introduction to Permaculture for arid regions.Living by utilising and renewing local arid land resources (applicable to most of the western US)

09/19 Passive Design and Retrofits - With little cost and skill, update any structure for efficient living using simple time tested passive cooling and heating techniques.

10/03 Alternative Building for Beginners - Discuss the pros and cons, costs and planning of applications such as earth building (adobe, superadobe, cob, rammed earth), straw bale and hybrid systems using nearly "free" materials and "lots" of labour.

10/17 Arid Landscaping and Simple Dry Farming - Discussions of ecosystem management as practised by Native Americans and the "Homesteaders" who followed in the semi-arid mountain regions, deserts, and "prarie lands" of the west.

10/31 Sustainable Water Practises - Discussions on harvesting, storing and using rainfall, hand driven wells, healthy and legal "greywater" recovery and use and conservation issues.

Classes are held at the Copper Mountain Campus in the high desert country of the Morongo Basin, a few hours drive from LA and just minutes from hiking, camping, and rock climbing in Joshua Tree National Park, halfway between the towns of Twentynine Palms and Joshua Tree.

$20.00 per session fee - advanced registration is requested.
